I chose this topic because I was very interested in learning about the Declaration of Independence and what is so special about the significant document. Also, I decided that it related to the theme very well because it is a huge turning point in history. In thinking about my topic more, I realized that the signing of the Declaration led to many more important turning points in America.
How I conducted my research:
First of all, I looked for books at my school library and I found a couple of books that helped me to begin my research. Then, I spent many hours of research on the Internet and especially tried to find as many primary sources as possible. During my research, I used “research records” that my teacher provided to keep track of the bibliography information and what information I found on the website. I also kept notes on a notebook piece of paper and a few notes in an old composition book to help me organize my thoughts and to remind me of other information I needed to research. Then I went to the public library and found 3 books and 1 magazine to help me finish up my research.
How I created and developed my website:
I created and developed my website by using Weebly editor, which is linked to the NHD website. I followed guidelines from my teacher such as creating a timeline, to help me organize my website. I started slow on my website and gradually added pages as I needed so I could organize my information while including important pieces in my project.
How my project relates to the theme:
My project relates to the theme, "turning points in history" because the Declaration of Independence is the beginning of the freedoms that America has today. Before the Declaration was signed, America was under Great Britain’s control and the colonists were being ruled unfairly. After this turning point, America finally became a free country and the people now have a say in the laws. Without the Declaration, and the brave men who risked their lives by signing it, we may not have all of the rights that we enjoy today. Try to imagine what our lives would be like now without the dedication of thousands of men and woman during the fight for independence. Imagine what it would be like now if there was one person ruling over America and nobody could vote or make decisions.
